IATE (‘Interactive Terminology for Europe’) is the EU\\\'s terminology database. It has been used in the EU institutions and agencies since summer 2004 for the collection, dissemination and management of EU-specific terminology. The EU terminology database is designed for any user looking for the right term.
With nearly 8 million terms in 1 million entries, IATE is the reference in the terminology field, and is considered to be the largest multilingual terminology database in the world. It offers extensive data in the 24 official EU languages, and also Latin.

Case study

The portal is an indispensable source of information for translators in any area of human activities or science. It is widely used by students of philology in their studies of translation, lexicology ( terminology), editing etc. It is also recommended to students and practitioners of other specialities to learn or perfect their professional language, as any domain that appers in the EU professional exchanges will find its place in the resource. Domains that have recently been extensively covered include the financial crisis, the environment, fisheries and migration. IATE uses the EuroVoc thesaurus as its domain classification system.

Guidelines

New search technologies provide a high degree of accuracy in the results retrieval. There are option to search field apart from the term field. There is Domain filtering across all EuroVoc domains and descriptors.
Users should be aware that IATE is a terminology database and not a dictionary, so it takes a concept-based approach and has a separate entry for every concept covered. While in a dictionary you will find a single entry for ‘mouse’ , with its various meanings, in IATE each meaning of the word ‘mouse’ will get its own entry.
Users should also be aware that some of the material is rather old or has never been properly checked, but some other items are recent and result from extensive research on the part of terminologists and from the consultation of experts. And, of course, there is a lot in between those extremes. It is important that you assess each solution on its merits. A term with a low reliability value and no additional information probably shouldn't be taken at face value. On the other hand, a term accompanied by a definition and supported by reliable references and other information is something you can probably trust. Use your own judgement and these clues to assess the reliability of the terms.
