Description

The Consultation Bank is a reference tool offering advice on the correct usage of Lithuanian vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. The answers to the questions related to the correctness of the language may be found on this website tool. The Consultation Bank currently has over 13,200 records. If you do not find the answer, you can write a question of concern and receive an answer relatively quickly.

Case study

1) There are a lot of students of English Philology (especially specialising in Translation Studies) who work with the Consultation Bank (I teach them 'Text Editing'). During exercises and various assessments (a colloquium, group homework, exam, etc.), the students constantly use this resource while editing original or translated texts to check whether the collocations or word combination comply with the norms of the general Lithuanian language. During the semester, students become familiar with using the Consultation Bank; if they do not find a word of concern in the normative dictionaries, they immediately look for it in the bank.
2) Students of various study programmes are given tasks to use the Consulting Bank. For example, in the seminars on 'Academic Communication', the texts of the specialty language are evaluated from the point of view of regularity; therefore, they make use of the Consultation Bank in order to search for certain words or constructions. (Analogous assignments are also given as independent work). In the last semester, I advise students writing bachelor’s or master’s theses, and I have noticed that some of them continue to use the Consultation Bank in the study process. To indicate to others the inaccuracies in the language and design of the written thesis, I provide specific references to the Consultation Bank.

Guidelines

Students preparing various texts related to the specialty should be trained to use the material of the Consulting Bank in assessing the (ir)regularity of the language phenomenon. Students of all disciplines should also be encouraged to use the resource when preparing their written work and research papers. It is recommended that learners, researchers, and lecturers not only refer to the Consultation Bank but also to various other pages maintained by the State Lithuanian Language Commission.

Comments:
The material provided by the Consultation Bank on the most common violations of the Lithuanian general language norm is primarily useful for people who already speak the Lithuanian language, but who want to check one or another (irregular) case. Applicability to other languages is limited; the materials of the Consulting Bank can be used only by people who already have a good knowledge of the Lithuanian language.
The material of the Consulting Bank is constantly and promptly filled in, which is useful as new rulings (punctuation, spelling, stress, etc.) appear faster than in printed reference works.
