The video is found on a website created for the project Limba română - oportunitate pentru integrare socială şi culturală / The Romanian Language – an opportunity for social and cultural integration as an initiative of Institutul Intercultural Timişoara/ The Intercultural institure of Timisoara in partnership with Universitatea de Vest of Timişoara, with Centrul Cultural Româno-Arab/Arab Romanian Cultural Centre of Timişoara and the DiversEtica Association. The project provides a methodological guide and various teaching resources aimed at improving the quality of the Romanian language courses and cultural orientation sessions.

Case study

The resource was tested on a group of students enrolled in the preparatory year, level A2 at he ovidius University, Constanta. The testing of the resource was on-site during a 2 hour (100 minutes) unit; the resource can be equally used in online format. The objective of the unit was to acquire basic medical terminology. In terms of the content, the resource is addressed only to the A2 level, but not B1 and B2 as stated in the resource file. The topic was interesting and inciting for the students, they did not have any difficulty in acquiring the new vocabulary and grammar structures. Throughout the lesson, they were actively involved in solving the tasks given. The problems that need addressing in the case of this resource are related to the technical aspects, as the interface that supports the video material is not very qualitative and the images of the persons are not very clear; also there were some problems related to the answers used to check the comprehension, as some of them were incorrect. Students are invited to:
analyse the image and describe each character and elicit information (which one is the doctor/nurse, what they are wearing, what is their role in the practice/hospital in general, which one is the patient, his/her possible ailment etc.)
role reading the text, compare the information in the text with the previously elicited information, identify new information
answer the trainer’s questions related to the text (What is Ioana’s ailment? What are the symptoms? What treatment does the doctor prescribe? When is she scheduled for a check-up? Etc.)
provide synonyms of various topical vocabulary (ex. medic, analiză, consultație, control, cabinet and use then in contexts of their own
create a new dialogue with the synonyms related to a different type of ailment (e.g. ophthalmologist)

Results achieved:
students are exposed to new situations where genuine language is used
acquire topical specialized vocabulary
get familiar with the conversation in a medical practice
create new contexts by analogy

The project Limba română - oportunitate pentru integrare socială şi culturală / The Romanian Language – an opportunity for social and cultural integration
Provides teaching resources organized according to the various learning levels; they include “words in context (sentences)”, “sentences in contexs”, “cultural orientation exercises”.
Lesson 8 is structured in several stages and focuses on reading comprehension, structure (grammar), vocabulary acquisition, writing, conversation related to a medical topic.
The content can be used as a starting point for more complex activities at most language levels.
