Description

This site can be used either as an additional teaching resource or a self-study resource, It is a daily news programme (text and recording) that covers hot news in an easy language. The resource is updated on a daily basis; one can listen to and discuss the most important news of the day. Such recordings are useful due to the fact that pieces of the most important and specific information are presented concisely and in a listener-friendly language. They introduce the new vocabulary of topical issues, therefore, can be very helpful to learners in acquiring target words or engaging them in discussions.

Case study

The resource is mostly used as an additional learning material for homework. Some common tasks include: listening to the news and commenting on the most important events, reading the corresponding text. Students can choose news items according to their needs or interests. and prepare them to present in the classroom. Such an activity is very useful for the beginning of a language class when some warm-up activities are in need. The task could be done in a rotating manner when every time a group of students has to prepare a news brief and tell it to the rest, address a problematic issue related to the news, discuss it together with the other learners (support or refute the presented ideas).

Comments:
Due to its daily updated content ( the current news), the site is a very motivating teaching/learning tool. The possibility to combine listening and reading, as well as the possibility to listen to the same piece of information several times, is of practical use for students with lower levels of Latvian. For the students having higher levels of language proficiency, this site is just a resource to develop their linguistic competence autonomously.
