Description

The Bank ( LRTB) offers 50 thematic glossaries of terms. At the moment the Bank contains 153 486 entries, with 16 940 of them approved, 235 375 standardized and 1171 not-standardized. The LRTB is regularly updated. The search tool works as follows: when you print in your target word or word combination, you get either its one-word ( with the indicated stress) equivalent or the term consisting of several words; also, you see the field of knowledge where the term is used, its definition, its equivalents in other languages and its origin. The provided information is trustworthy; it can be used by students and teachers, in writing and orally, in a wide range of professional contexts.

Case study

1). Students of various study programmes get tasks based on the use of the LRTB. They are asked to describe their speciality ( major subject) using 5-10 terms from the Bank. Coping with the task includes several steps: first they find the term and master its stress pattern in most risk-prone declension cases ( sg. Ins. and Loc. ; pl. Acc.) ; then they write its definition; comment on its composition and origin. Students see for themselves the applicability and benefits of the site; most probably they will use the resource in further studies and professional activities.
2) The students of English Philology ( specializing in translation) use the LRTB to find English equivalents for Lithuanian terms and vice versa; thus, they become aware of the precision and clarity in the translation of terms in contrast to the translation of other lexical units.
We hope all the pages of the LRTB site will be completed before long.

Guidelines

Encourage your students to use the LRTB site to verify the terms they need for producing or translating specific purpose texts in professional contexts; show them the advantage of knowing term equivalents in other languages.

Comments:
The working language of the LRTB site is Lithuanian; therefore speakers of other languages may encounter problems while navigating and using the resource. The suggested term equivalents in several languages make the resource most valuable for both Lithuanian speakers and foreigners who specialize in a certain field of science. As the LRTB site has just been modernized; some information is still missing ( as in “About LRTB”). Not all of the terms approved by the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language have been uploaded in the renewed site yet.
