From the technological point of view, to use the resource, a computer with internet access and a platform that allows screen sharing are required. This is an institutional video of the Instituto de Emergência Médica (INEM) for the AED (Automatic external defibrillator) Programme.
The resource is aimed at students with an intermediate language proficiency level (B1 or B2). Students who may be less comfortable with the topic may be able to complete the task in a less descriptive and developed way.
Students with a higher level of proficiency (C1 and C2) will be able to use it from a technical lexical and critical thinking point of view to problematise legislation and public opinion about defibrillators in public places.
This resource meets the needs of intermediate and advanced learners who want to improve their speaking and listening skills in specific contexts: Portuguese for health and also appropriate in the context of Health and Legislation. This material can be a good support resource for the teacher him/herself, who can use it in the classroom with his/her students, and the students who, autonomously, can explore it. Students need to have at least B1 level in order to understand the technical vocabulary and know the details of the EAD controversy both in Portugal and in their home country. If used by the teacher, this material can fulfil a task-based approach, as suggested in the guidelines

Case study

In the case of Portuguese FL final year undergraduate students, it would be suitable for the activities of the CEFR B2 level, within the scope of medical and health language. Besides listening and taking lexical and grammatical notes of medical terms, creating a debate on good practices, future improvements and new legislation on the access to AEDs in public spaces, I would ask for a personal and meditated critical commentary of the text inserted under the Youtube video, with statistical information, awareness and commitment of the SNS with this new public and consensual medical practice.

Guidelines

Introduction (warm-up): discuss the pros and cons of AEDs in public spaces; recognise the beginning of the process and awareness in European and Portuguese society. Collect from the class ideas, words or representations associated with health and critical situations in public spaces.
Step 1: Students watch and listen to the INEM video (2:54 minutes) While watching, students should take notes, technical words, health lexicon expressions, and legislative issues.
Step 2: Students debate in small groups with pros and cons of AED use to move to large group discussion.
Step 3: Writing activity: Critical, thoughtful, and meditated appreciation of the written text under the Youtube video.
Step 4: Follow-up at home. New written activity with a text proposal under the video that improves and motivates citizens in the perception and importance of AEDs. Activity should be done in groups of ¾ students.

Comments:
Overall, this resource meets the needs of students and teachers, as students can use it quite autonomously, while teachers can add this resource to their lesson plans and, based on this video and others provided on INEM's Youtube channel (with 15. 300 suscriptors), they can create and adapt other activities, questions and tasks on Health topics, especially current ones like AED, not only in Portugal, but also in Europe and in the world, establishing comparisons between the situation of the public access points to AED in the different countries and the way the procedure, installation, use and success of it is faced. It is also a motivational resource, since the subject is current, controversial and in full trend in all countries.
