Description

The Online Portuguese platform is a platform available on the portal of the High Commission for Migrations. This platform for learning European Portuguese for speakers of other languages aims to assist all those who, living in Portugal as emigrants, as tourists, or even as learners of Portuguese for personal enrichment, wish to learn the Portuguese language autonomously, free of charge and at their own pace. It also aims to give the learner the linguistic and cultural tools necessary to become an independent speaker of the language. Therefore, 24 modules are available covering levels A1, A2, B1 and B2. In these modules, learners have at their disposal exercises in the following areas: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar.
At the end of each of the 6 modules (following the order indicated) there is an exam which will assess the knowledge obtained so far. In level A (1 and 2), the platform uses images and the spoken and written word to associate the spoken word with the written word and its meaning. The platform also allows the consultation of dictionaries and glossaries of grammatical terms to facilitate questions related to the functioning of the language. For reading and speaking comprehension, audio, video and written texts are also presented on the themes of each module. These themes cover topics such as personal identification and characterisation, food, festivities and free time in level A. At level B, some of the topics approached are: professional and personal life, activities and citizenship, rights and freedoms, among others. It also assigns each user a tutor to monitor and guide the learner's learning and progress.

Case study

Because of the nature of the resource, aimed at the autonomous use of the resources presented, it seems to us that this platform is suitable for learners of Portuguese as a non-native language since it offers them quality linguistic tools that meet the CEFR guidelines. Therefore, learners of Portuguese as a foreign language will find here an interactive and appealing way to have classes as they will be assigned a tutor with whom they can exchange messages. Moreover, the platform allows them to have access to the evaluation of the exams. The cultural part is not neglected either, since in level B, even though images are no longer used to explain vocabulary, images are used to show cultural manifestations.

Guidelines

This platform requires autonomous use by the users. Therefore, they should follow the steps indicated on the platform.
Step 1: it is important to listen to the summary in order to have a general idea of the functioning of the platform, its contents and organisation.
Step 2: if you are an A1 level Portuguese speaker, you should follow the modules of this level in the order indicated.
Step 3: whenever there are doubts, the dictionary and glossary are useful and important tools in the whole process of learning Portuguese as a foreign language.
Step 4: when you have completed the first six modules, you may take an exam, always supported by the guidance of the tutor assigned to you.

Comments:
This resource is essentially aimed at students/learners wanting to learn the Portuguese language autonomously and free of charge. It has the advantage of having a tutor at their disposal who can assist learners in this stage of learning, whether it is initial or already as an independent user of the language. Although free of charge, it is necessary to register on the platform with personal details such as country, nationality, email, mobile phone number and password. From that moment on, the registration is concluded and it is only necessary to login. The platform is well organized and easy to use since the different modules are distributed according to the levels, A (1, 2) or B (1,2).
