Description

This webpage is a free-to-use part of a larger Estonian-language project. It offers three types of activities: a collection of videos posted as a YouTube channel after the creator's name, a collection of interactive language games (which may be used as quizzes), and a collection of flashcards. The graphics of the webpage are lively and user-friendly. The webpage is easy to follow as accompanying instructions are given in English. The user may select the type of activity of interest and proceed with it by following the relevant link. For instance, the collection of language games is quite large and practices understanding of both grammatical concepts and everyday language expressions. The flashcards section requires the user to sign in, but the flashcards themselves are free to use. The video resources are posted on YouTube, are free to use and require no registration. This resource may be of interest to those willing to learn the basics of Estonian in a textbook-free environment.

Case study

The instructor / learner may select the type of activity they are willing to proceed with: video mini-lessons, interactive language marching games, or flashcards (to use the latter, the user needs to sign up). If the user selected language games, upon completing a game they will receive a summary of their performance, after which the game may be repeated. The games are generally brief, but engaging enough, and are aimed at developing both lexical and grammatical skills. The video resource page takes the user to YouTube. There as many as 19 video lessons deal with particular aspects of Estonian language, both lexis and grammar, such as numbers, names of countries, basic phrases, tense use, and case use. The author of the resource first presents the material and instructions in English, and then illustrates relevant use in Estonian. The interactive video backgrounds facilitate acquisition of new material.

Guidelines

Follow the link and then select the option of interest. You will be taken to another page with a variety of resources of this particular kind - videos, language games, or flashcards. No registration is needed for videos and language games. Registration is needed for flashcards, but the flashcards themselves are free to use.

Comments:
The resource is visually attractive and offers a lively interactive environment where the user may choose among the different types of activities and topics. Each of the resource type may be used either autonomously, or be combined with the other types of resources of this webpage at the discretion of the learner/instructor. Since the Flashcards zone is free but requires signing up, it is the only area where additional preparation steps need to be taken. The resource provides an enjoyable learning environment, and one can only regret that it does not contain activities for more advanced users or users interested in acquiring Estonian for specific purposes.
