Description

Suomea edistyneille is an advanced learning material intended for students who are fairly fluent in Finnish but are not native Finnish speakers. The material aims to practice language skills at levels B2-C1. The learning modules can be accessed via HAKA login but are usable also as guest. The material package contains eight modules that will help students improve already good Finnish language skills. The different modules focus on different themes and aspects of the language and they include material and assignments by topic. Teacher or student may choose some of the sections or use the entire material. The modules can be used as such or they can be modified to suit individual ways of teaching and learning. The modules include material and assignments in different categories: listening and reading comprehension, oral interaction, speech production and writing. The first module is about societal affairs and vocabulary. The second module theme are different media and related vocabulary. In the center of the third module is the scientific text and academic writing and reading. The modules from four to six are about communication both online environments and at professional contexts. The last two modules are for the final stages students preparing their thesis. The modules concentrate on controlling sources, source critique, marking them in texts and connecting the referencing to students own thinking, and planning the work for thesis.

Case study

This teaching source was used as part of a lesson intended for a class of advanced level Finnish language students, within a cycle of lessons dedicated to textual skills which aimed to learn how to produce different types of texts. The specific objective of the lesson in question was to familiarize with the characteristics of an informative text (tiedottava teksti) and to learn how to write a statement (tiedote). For this purpose we chose to focus on module 2, on different media and related vocabulary. The students - led by the teacher - carried out two of the activities proposed within the module; for the first, focused on finding information and vocabulary, they chose to focus on the topic of climate change: they searched for information about it in different types of media (online articles, newspapers, blogs and podcasts, social media) and built a glossary of the main terms related to the selected topic. Then everyone wrote a factsheet, following the instructions also conveyed through a short and effective video. The resource had a very positive impact on the students, who were enthusiastic about being able to choose the topic to work on and to practice on issues of interest (not already chosen by teacher). The resource setting is excellent both at a macroscopic level (synthetic overview of each module, tasks and objectives; excellent extra support tools) and microscopic level: in addition to leaving ample freedom of choice, the setting of the proposed activities is very clear (see lists) and easy to use. This did allow students to acquire a learning method applicable in numerous other contexts. The students learned the essential tools to write a new type of text and they also gained familiarity on carrying out web searches in Finnish (for example newspapers, blogs, etc.). The resource has an excellent flexibility and it can be adapted to meet the most different needs; you can do the same exercises by choosing different topics for infinite times.
