German for Social Professions is a series of exercises offered by the Goethe-Institut. It introduces the learner to the specific vocabulary of corresponding professions (physician, geriatric nurse, educator). The target group includes beginners (level A 1) who want to familiarize themselves with basic vocabulary needed in the relevant professions. Simple object naming and finding pairs by using pictures as well as interactive games such as memory make the learning process more interesting. Key grammar areas such as verb conjugation, indirect speech and the correct usage of prepositions are covered by exercises, that are embedded in the specific context of social professions. Learners find audio material to practise their listening skills. They can furthermore work themselves work through realistic dialogues of everyday professional life. They thereby extend their vocabulary relevant to this professional group.
Due to their small size, the exercise units are particularly suitable for short but regular practice and repetition and can therefore also be easily integrated into the daily routine of people who are already working.
The exercise set is primarily designed for independent learning as part of a self-study program, but individual elements can also be easily incorporated by teachers into teaching units.

Prerequisite for participation: Level A2+/B1 of the CEFR.
Method used:
This resource is a good starting point for a blended learning course or a face-to-face course. In the blended learning course for physicians, the sequences "In a medical practice", "Working in Germany" (case study of a physician from Bulgaria) and "Job advertisements" would be integrated into the preparatory units of the blended learning course.
In the blended learning course for geriatric nurses, the sequences "In a medical practice", "Geriatric care" and "Job advertisements" are suitable and additionally the video (in the additional material of this resource) "Professions in portrait-in geriatric care". In the preparation phase, the participants are tutored so that the correction missing in the resource is made possible and, in addition, further questions of the participants can be dealt with.
In the case of a face-to-face course, these sequences could also be used in the respective units as an introduction to the respective topic and as additional material for repetition.
The results obtained:
Through these exercises, the basic vocabulary in everyday professional life and listening comprehension is trained.
The risks to be taken into account when using the resource:
The lack of correction of errors in the resource must be considered when integrating the materials into a course.

The use of the course does not require any registration. It is recommended to start with the exercise set "Objects in the workplace: In a doctor's office" in order to familiarize yourself with simple object names (language level A1). As the level of difficulty increases with each exercise set, it is generally recommended to work through the sets in the given order. The exercise sets are marked with the respective language level, so that it is no problem to find the suitable offer for yourself. After completing a task, it is possible to have the answers checked automatically. The percentage of correct answers is displayed in a field, incorrect answers are left open for further processing.

This is a video documenting the classic everyday working life of a geriatric nurse in Germany. If needed, the text can be printed out as a document to read along. The resource includes a worksheet, as well as handouts for teachers.
