USE OF QUALITY DIGITAL-BASED LANGUAGE TEACHING SOURCES AS AN INTEGRATION OR ALTERNATIVE TO CLASSROOM TEACHING APPROACHES

Table of Contents

Operative tool 1 - Before integrating a media-based digital resource in a language programme

OERs are buzzwords in education today. Never before have we had so many resources, practices and opportunities at our disposal or, rather, at our fingertips. From text to photos to sound and video, teachers have access to a variety of different types of available content, all of which can be used freely when properly attributed. Do YOU know how to find, attribute and repurpose such materials?
Going open is more a philosophy than a skill. But obviously, it takes a handful of skills to be able to apply this philosophy in the classroom. Before selecting an appropriate OER for your subject, assess it with a few questions given below:
1. Is the resource FREE?
2. Do you have to REGISTER to use the resource?
3. Is it possible to access the resource from your university desk/lab/class?
4. Is the resource accessible from your students’ places?
5. Is there any risk of the resource being removed from “open access”?
6. Does the resource require any special technical facilities (audio/mic? multimedia? speakers?)
7. Does the resource comply with the university code of ethics?
8. Does the resource allow alterations/additions/ omissions that you may need for specific teaching tasks?
9. Does your use of the resource comply with general copyright laws?
10. Does the resource need regular updates?
