Description

Teacher's Tools is a project commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Research, which started in 2019. The main goal of the project is to create a comprehensive framework facilitating the preparation of Estonian as a second language language courses and to create a link between language learning and language assessment. The resource also aims to develop a unified metalanguage for dealing with the vocabulary and grammar competence of Estonian as a second language and is designed so as to cover both younger students of Estonian and adult learners. The main page of the resource contains links to the following thematic pages: Vocabulary, Grammar, Situations of Use, Text Evaluation, and information about the project itself.

Case study

For instance, the section The Text Assessment Tool ("Teksti hindamise") helps determine the correspondence of text vocabulary and morphological forms to language proficiency levels and consequently, helps the lecturer decide whether a text is appropriate for a language learner to read. The lecturer may copy-paste an excerpt of a text (up to 2000 characters) into a dedicated slot at the bottom of the page https://sonaveeb.ee/teacher-tools/#/rating. The algorithm will assess the complexity of the text based on the language level scale from A1 to C2 and will give the result in the slot on the right.

The vocabulary level of the text: vocabulary relevance is determined on the basis of vocabulary lists for both young language learners and adults. If a word does not appear in the lists, its relevance will not be determined and the words will not be highlighted in colour in the text. The possible limitations of the program are homonyms and multi-word expressions. The analysis of form formation is based on the description of the grammar competence of a young language learner, the description of adults is being developed. The program assesses the adequacy of word forms, the meaning of words (vocabulary level) is not taken into account.

Guidelines

The resource will be useful to Estonian-speaking lecturers, course developers and assessors. The website is an ongoing project, so it is likely that pages will be supplemented with further content. Each of the pages - Vocabulary, Grammar, Situations of Use, and Texts - may be used individually. Jointly, they provide a comprehensive framework of the assessment of language resources. The page "Projektist" ("About the Project") contains links to further informational resources, references, and contact information for the developer team of the webpage itself.

Comments:
The resource is valuable for those working in the teacher training area, language assessors and language teachers involved in developing materials. The webpage is intended to serve as a point of reference allowing the user to ascertain the proficiency level of an activity along a given dimension, such as grammar, vocabulary, or the level of a text. The pages work on the "feed"-and-response principle. The resource has been designed following the guidelines of both European and local language reference frameworks.
