Description

The resource consists of a video monologue (9 min 46) by a state registrar, giving gradually detailed information about the identity documents required in Romania, such as the birth certificate and the personal identification card. It provides data on who can get those documents, on what conditions, what age etc., also introducing associated vocabulary related to the institutions and elements that these documents contain. It is a sample of genuine use of specialized legal discourse. As it speaks about two different documents, it can be split into two shorter units. Although the speech pace is controlled and not very fast, it is fluent (it has instance of connected speech) and it addresses more advanced learners (B2). The video can be added subtitling (see attached video), thus increasing usability.

Guidelines

Please produce a check list / guidelines on how to use the resource.
- Warm-up activity: announces the topic, asks questions to elicit what the learners know about the documents, take them out, describe them, name the components and types of data they contain
- pre-listening activity: the trainer presents the learners with the sequence of elements / steps necessary to acquire the two documents and asks learners to listen/watch the video and arrange the data in the correct order
- after-listening activity: the trainer can select sentences from the video and present them in altered form to the trainers and ask them to identify the errors/to assess the True/False value toe ach sentence or similar activities
- follow-up: the trainer may ask learners to compare the Romanian ID to those in their countries of origins and compare and contrast them in terms of elements on the document, situations when they are used, steps to take when the document is lost/stolen etc.
- speaking skill: the trainer may ask learners to compare the various details about this document with others – e.g. the passport – and compare and contrast their personal data contained, situations when they are used etc.
- the trainers can ask learners to write a short guide to a foreign student who has just arrived to Romania on how to deal with the procedures related to obtaining the necessary documents and the risks for not going through the right steps

Comments:
Although it is not genuinely interactive, the video offers a motivating lecture-type presentation of the two basic documents required in the Romanian legal system. It matches the needs of students with more advanced knowledge of the language (B2), as both the specialized vocabulary and the syntax of the discourse are of a more complex nature. The resource cannot be used as such, the lecturer needs additional work to produce adequate materials, but it is easily adaptable to a variety of tasks addressing a variety of skills. The resource is free and easily accessible by both learners and lecturers the site - resource for the legal education of the Romanian public – contains other similar videos and materials that can be adapted to various degrees for the teaching of legal language.
