Description

The resource is a progressive course to learn Swedish from the basics to a more advanced level, including a lot of visual and audio material, thus promoting pronunciation and enhancing speaking skills. The course is organized in levels and the learner chooses from within a range of topics and then tasks to complete.
The resource can be easily explored on an individual level and requires internet access, either on a computer or mobile device. It is quite intuitive, even if you do not know Swedish at all and you are starting from A1 in Swedish as a Foreign Language. It can be adapted to specific purpose classes, such as Swedish for tourism or business.

Case study

This resource was tested with a group of 12 MA students. These students, who master some languages (MA in Translation) and have a rather intuitive use and knowledge of foreign languages, were asked to test the resource in an autonomous way and at their own pace. Then they were asked to make some comments on the resource and its use. The reactions were rather positive. The students stated that the interactive software was simple enough that anyone should be able to use it and start understanding the language. Its interactive input makes it more appealing for the user instead of just reading through texts. Students also found the website Hej Svenska well organised, with different subjects divided by levels. The exercises themselves are animated and interactive, allowing them to memorise words by using fun pictures. Even though repetitive, students felt it’s the best way to learn without being boring.

Guidelines

Autonomous learning:
1. Follow the order of the tasks, since the course is progressive.
2. Repeat as many times as you want. Record yourself on your smartphone and compare your pronunciation with the one provided in the resource.
3. Write down the situations in order to practice.
Classroom context:
The lecturer can use this course as an exercise to complete within the subject itself, in order to reinforce specific aspects of language for tourism and business. The resource can also be used as a homework and pronunciation reinforcement exercise.

Comments:
The resource is easily accessible on several platforms and it is also easy to use and adapt to several contexts starting from A1 level. It is also interactive although it does not save the work carried out. Because of this, the respect for privacy is high. No installation is required and it can be adapted to several learning scenarios: in groups, in pairs or individually, thus being adaptable to the learners’ needs. The software is easy to learn with. Even though some of the games are repetitive, they always appear in a different order. The display is appealing for people of all ages.
