Description

As the online description of the resource suggests, this resource is primarily lexicographical and offers 5000 commonly used words that are explained in a simple language. But in fact this is more than just a dictionary. The webpage where the resource is located has two types of activity packs: pdf files and online pages. Pdf packs are as follows: The User Guide, Picture pages, Study pages, Countries and Peoples, Grammar Tables and Teacher pages (named "for teacher"). The online component is composed of the page About the Dictionary, as well as the two activity domains Pictures and Sounds and Let's Play! The main page also contains the Search option, where individual words may be searched for in either of the three options: "a word", "word senses", or "search everywhere". The resource has been developed by the Institute of the Estonian Language (Eesti Keele Instituut) under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Research within the framework of the national programme “Estonian Language and Cultural Memory”.

There are two picture dictionaries available, on online and the other offline (downlodable), the online picture dictionary contains more pages. Study pages or Grammar Tables imply more independent learning, but may also be used in the classroom.

Comments:
The resource functions with minimum technical requirements. Essentially most of the materials can be downloaded in pdf format and successfully used later on. Both autonomous learning and classroom instruction are possible. The students may also be assigned materials as downloadable files or as online activities. Although online activities are rather limited, they nevertheless provide for a nice variation in the learning process, as they offer both the information-based and quiz-based modes of learning. Besides, pronunciation of relevant lexical items can also be practiced there. The downloadable file under the entry "for teacher" contains suggestions as to the possible ways of arranging work in the classroom. Study pages offer a rich variety of items to master, from telling the time to writing a CV. One potential inconvenience of the resource is that the materials in pdf files come in Estonian only and, unlike the English-language guidelines on the main webpage of the resource, contain no English instructions or descriptions.
