The aim of the HFL (Hungarian as a Foreign Language) project is to offer both learners and teachers of Hungarian as a foreign language a wide range of free online e-learning materials. First of all, the material includes several kinds of interactive tasks that – despite being plain and efficient – seem to be in shortage and are scarcely accessible for free (or even for fee). The various, different, mostly interactive materials, or “innovations” are tried and tested solutions. The material makes learning interesting and a fun activity even if someone is in the target language environment for early childhood. The creators resist the temptation to offer or promise to achieve good language skills, quickly, easily, or without work. The materials included are partly interactive electronic versions (readings, grammatical and lexical exercises, etc.) of a language book made a few years ago, but not available in shops. The materials aim to develop various sub-skills. Although most of the interactive tasks are written tasks, it is recommended that the learner perform them orally to increase efficiency.

Case study

The material would either be tested in classroom context or individually. First students would be asked to fill in certain “word games” at home. In class the same games would be solved in a form of competition. After checking the understanding, students would be instructed to collect more vocabulary on the given topic. By doing this considerable vocabulary would be elicited in connection with a particular topic, which would be shared in the group. Based on the new words and previously learnt vocabulary students would be asked to form sentences. The so called “Coloraid” method would be used to practice the basic sentence structures and the core vocabulary. It is sentence construction with pictures and stimuli in which the main syntactic functions (subject, predicate/verb, direct object, and adverbial complement) are distinguished by colours. “Mixed sentence and text completion” would be used to form interactive sentences and texts on grammar (mainly syntax) and vocabulary. Flexible help and evaluation are part of the interactive material.
As a final part the sentences would be interlinked to create meaningful texts on the given topic. The final versions would be checked not only in their written form but orally as well.

Guidelines

“Morfi” contains exercises to facilitate the acquisition of the grammatical forms of Hungarian (i.e. its morphological components): the forms of nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. with special emphasis on the functional elements (suffixes prefixes, postpositions, etc).
“Coloroid” practices the basic sentence structures and the core vocabulary: sentence construction with pictures and stimuli in which the main syntactic functions (subject, predicate/verb, direct object, and adverbial complements) are distinguished by colours.

Step by step readings - from the first steps to texts of medium complexity with vocabulary support in six languages (English, French German, Italian, Russian and Spanish). Mixed sentence and text completion

PictoVocabulary
Completion of texts accompanied by pictures with missing elements (A); or random generation of text completion or text reconstruction exercises by deleting words (from 1 word to the total number of words in the text) and replacing each letter with an asterisk. The lexical help function (for now in three languages: English, Spanish and Russian) gives the meaning of the missing elements (A), or the meaning of most of the words (B).

Numberwriter: Cardinal numbers
How to say and write the cardinal numbers in Hungarian. The task consists of saying aloud and/or writing (in words) an optional cardinal number (given in figures by the user) or a cardinal number randomly selected by the computer (in the range between 1 and 9,999,999,999). While the written solution is checked by the program, in the case of the oral one a sort of autocheck is used: after saying the number aloud, the user can check it on the basis of the written form.

Telling the time
How to write the time (hours and minutes) in figures or in words and how to say it in Hungarian. The task consists of writing (in words) an optional hour (given in figures by the user) or an hour randomly selected by the program, and/or pronouncing it, checking the result in both cases on the basis of the written form.

Ragozgató Conjugator
Interactive verb conjugator. It gives all the correct forms of the most important regular and irregular verbs in Present and Past Indicative, Present Conditional and Imperative/Subjunctive. The verb selection is done easier by a 900 item list of the most frequent Hungarian verbs, accompanied by equivalences in two languages (English and Spanish). However, the application's main feature is an interactive exercise system. Users can write in any conjugated form/forms of the selected verb and get it/them verified by the application.

Word games
Presentation and written practice of vocabulary items belonging to various topics (house and home, food, drinks, fruits, professions, activities, animals, names of countries, in the street, etc.) with the help of pictures. E.g. dice game, memory game, hangman, etc.

Step 1: Pre-watching activity. Tell the students that they are going to find different exercises that can develop their Hungarian as a foreign language skills. While getting familiar with the parts of the online learning project the easiest exercises are chosen to start practising.
Step 2: Students get familiar with the exercises, solve some of them and share their results in class.
Step 3: Students then give feedback on their understanding. At the same time, they tell their opinion about their view of success and achievements.
Step 4: Students are divided in groups, and they solve some of the exercises as a competition. As a follow up exercise, they create sentences and texts on the learnt vocabulary and sentence structure. They can also construct similar exercises from the vocabulary they know.

Comments:
The online learning project is challenging for both students and lecturers. The various exercises give the basics of learning Hungarian as a Foreign Language. The different exercises, texts, tests, word and language games are inspirating for both students and lecturers, since they offer not only useful information but put it in a playful frame. The material provides considerable data for learners.
Although the project is Hungarian it offers alternatives in other foreign languages, such as English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian giving the possibility of the language transfer or making understanding easier.
The online interactive exercises are demanding and educating, they are of high quality. A global view is provided with the access of the various languages.
Monitoring students’ own progress is not challenging because assessment can be aimed at not only vocabulary but also morphology and sentence structure.
It is possible to adopt the contents to students’ need because the material makes it possible to choose from several different exercises.
Although the material is intended to a larger audience, it is excellent for using it in a language class and students can use it individually as well and can give an account of their knowledge.
