Description

This resource is intended for students willing to build their colloquial Latvian vocabulary. This resource contains 42 topics, such as feelings, sports, animals, abstract items, beverages, traffic, people, electric appliances, etc. The starting page is a menu listing all the topics in English ( but you can modify the source language and switch to your native language both on the page you are in as well as at the main page of the resource, https://www.50languages.com). Every topic name is accompanied by an audio recording with the pronunciation of the relevant item (click the rightward looking arrow). Upon clicking on the image representing the selected topic, you are taken to a page where a number of relevant lexical items are provided in English (or your native language, if you have switched to it) and Latvian. Every lexical item, again, is written down in Latvian, and is accompanied by an image, a translation into the source language, and a pronunciation. If you click on the plus sign "+" in the right-most column, a pop-up window will appear, offering you to check if you know the same word in any of the other 49 languages, represented by little flag icons.

Case study

Every topic can be assigned for individual study, or covered together in class. Every lexical item is accompanied by an image, a translation into the source language, and a recording with the pronunciation by a native speaker of Latvian. This makes learning new vocabulary easy and entertaining enough, while at the same time making sure that proper pronunciation is practiced. There are numerous possibilities to incorporate other languages: all one needs to do is click on a plus sign "+" next to the relevant lexical item and a pop up window appears with little icon flags representing 49 more languages. The same icon flags can be found at the top of the page. This feature makes the resource quite unique in its openness to incorporating other languages (which may serve both as source and target languages) into the learning process.

2. Select the topic of interest from the list of 42 topics and click on it.
3. You will be taken to a new page which contains the relevant vocabulary and audio recording.
4. You can now practice core vocabulary on the selected topic as well as check or learn the relevant lexical items in other languages by clicking a plus sign "+" next to every lexical item on the page.

Comments:
This is an easily navigable resource for learning Latvian both in classroom and independently. The resource is extremely convenient as you can move to the main page and select the source language, if it is not English. The resource allows learning new vocabulary from scratch, which may be appealing to those just starting to learn the language. It may also be appreciated by those already in lower levels of language proficiency, as there are numerous lexical items on a broad variety of topics. All items are accompanied by an audio recording. The resource is very user-friendly and looks quite light-hearted and easy-going. Meanwhile the scope of the vocabulary offered, and helpful audio tracks provide for an effective learning environment. It is convenient that the page allows navigation to a more advanced level of useful phrases and expressions and at all points offers connections to 49 more languages.
