Description

TTyöelämän suomea is a learning material on professional Finnish in business and administration for students with basic Finnish level (A2-B2). It is a full online course that contains 8 different modules on business and administration related vocabulary and simulations of different kinds of tasks in authentic professional context. The material includes videos, exercises and tests, and proposes also a portfolio work as assessment method of all the course activities and suggests digital tool to be used. Relative grammar is included in the specific Kielitreeniä -section and the material has detailed guidelines for teachers. The material is suitable for autonomous study and classroom activities.

Case study

The course provides a wide range of authentic learning material on business and administration area language and culture skills. It suits well for Process-Oriented Learning and proposes as learning method a student portfolio. Portfolio-based assessment focuses on the entire process rather than individual tasks. It is flexible and motivates the learner. From the modules proposed in the teaching source, the learner selects tasks that best meet their needs and compiles a digital portfolio of the selected activities. The number of credits can be determined by the teacher according to the type of the assignments chosen and the needs of the student.
The portfolio encourages the learner to set their own goals and to reflect on their own learning and linguistic and cultural competence. The digital portfolio easily adapts for different types of assignments that allow to practice different areas of language and cultural skills proposed in the course.
Important in portfolio work is to give clear and adequate instructions for both assignments and portfolio work, to help students to select the material that meets their specific needs, to give regular feedback and finally to give clear information on evaluation criteria.

Comments:
This learning material is a full course that comprises high-quality teaching and learning material suitable for self-study and classroom teaching. The material gives space to the students reflection on their learning strategies and the course starts with tasks that help students to think about their skills and goals. The material suggests some technical digital tools that suit for the tasks, but the student can change the digital tools suggested in the task instructions to more suitable ones. Also the portfolio assessment method encourage students to reflect on their knowledge and skills and help to assess their competences, monitor their progress and to record their learning experience in an innovative way.
