Description

This language learning app works both on desktop and mobile versions and offers courses designed for any level from beginners to advanced users. Apart from the course itself words and phrases are practised in a rather intuitive way through a game-based approach applied in a single player or multi-player environment. Besides online playing, there are also tournaments and prizes to achieve. In the end, there is even the possibility to obtain a certificate. While playing or learning participants have continuous access to statistics regarding the ongoing games anywhere in the world, number of players/users participating as well as daily ratings.

Case study

This resource does not require previous knowledge of the language, only a high level of focus, since the game-based approach is demanding in terms of time, for instance. Learners will contact with written and spoken Swedish and will have the opportunity to produce written content. There is also the possibility to always repeat what is being said.
This material should primarily be used in a context of autonomous learning, however, usage in class at lower levels, such as A1 and A2 is also possible. The learning app uses random vocabulary. When using the multi-player approach the app becomes particularly engaging, since the learner has to do the best to win the tournament or game.

Guidelines

If used in a classroom context.
1. Students register for free and choose between the single player or multi-player environment.
2. Once this is chosen, learners can play as long as they like because their involvement is continuously activated along with several levels and steps.
3. When the student does not score properly, the audio files can be activated for repetition or correctness as well as pronunciation technique.
4. Apart from pronunciation and simple phrases, the app also delves into grammar using a task-based approach.

Comments:
Since Swedish might be hard to learn from the pronunciation and speaking perspective, this learning app can be an extra help, since it focuses on daily vocabulary topics and, apart from the audio files, it also presents quite good visual flashcards and intuitive gaming possibilities. It is very easy to use from a technical point of view and the mobile version is certainly a plus. If no Internet connection is available there is also an offline feature, with most of the vocabulary embedded. This learning app is highly motivational and can be the answer to several professional and learning contexts.
