Description

The publication is made of tests used for placing students of the Summer School of SAS into studying groups (classes). It consists of two parts: the first part is made of 5 tests for beginners and pre-intermediate students. Tests consist of questions of selective nature as well as "fill the blanks" and a simple written exercise. The second part of the publication consists of 5 tests for intermediate and advanced students. Each test contains an introductory text aimed at reading with comprehension and following exercises, another part of the test is a written exercise - an essay. The last part of the publication is the key (answers) to the tests.

Case study

The material can be tested in classroom context. Students are asked to do the tests as placement tests. Based on the results, they can be recommended what level of Slovakian course they should enroll. Then they can be navigated to e.g. e-slovak.sk website to choose an appropriate self-study course for themselves. After completing a course, they can be tested on their knowledge about Slovakian again. Their development can be detected by the results of the two tests. Moreover, the efficiency of the online resources recommended to them can also be evaluated based on the test results.
The tests can used outside of classroom context, also. Anytime a student wants to get some feedback on their level in Slovakian, the tests can be used; as they come with keys, they are suitable for self-check.

Guidelines

The testbook contains ten tests altogether. The tests are ideal both for formative and summative assessment. The tests can be used either as placement or final tests depending on the aim. The first five tests are for A1-B1 students. For complete beginners the tests are ideal to be used as placement tests, as students can be enrolled in a course that suits their needs the most. The second five tests are for more advanced learners, therefore the tests can be used as placement tests or final tests. In the second case a course can be ended by completing one of the tests, and the results show the students’ achievement in a course.
