Getionary .pl is an online Polish-English, English-Polish dictionary of technical, medical, legal and computer terms.
The free version contains 142 thousand word-titles, provides pronunciation in Polish and English. A mobile version for phones and tablets can be downloaded from m.gestionary.pl.
You do not need to register on the platform to access the free online version.
Access to more complex specialist dictionaries is subject to a fee (monthly or annual subscription).
The free access version Getionary.pl (general) is a useful working tool for students, translators, for understanding specialised texts. Access is fast, spelling errors are pointed out when searching for terms, examples of the use of terms in context and collocations are given.

Case study

The proposed specialist dictionary offers only limited free access. But again, it is a useful tool for building lessons. Of course, users need to be familiar with specialised terminology in English.
In class, several specialised terms are offered to students (depending on their level of English proficiency) as part of the lesson. For example,

When constructing the teaching material, the teacher selects a specialised text (e.g. for level B2 - C1,

Although access without charge is limited, this online dictionary is quite a good working tool to recommend to students interested in specialised language.

Guidelines

The teacher introduces students to the Getionary.pl platform, the sections and how to search for terms. He informs them that there is also a version for mobile phones and tablets and shows them the link where it can be downloaded.
1. The teacher suggests a term, e.g. spółka (company). Together with the students they look up the term in dictionaries. The search engine gives 326 entries but from these they will choose 7 entries.
2. The teacher invites the students to open the Autentyczne teksty section. From there they will choose the excerpts from Kodeks spółek handlowy / Company Code.
3. They will check the terminology for the types of companies mentioned in those paragraphs.
4. The teacher proposes to the students a fragment (150 words) from a legal/economic text, in which the checked terms appear.
5. Students read the text and check other unknown terms in Getionary.pl.
Remark:
Depending on the students' profile, this scenario can be adapted for medical or technical terminology.

Comments:
Students could check the differences between the use of terms in common language and specialist languages, they can take ownership of domain-specific terminology.
In the Autentyczne teksty/ Authentic texts section, excerpts from articles, blogs, documents are provided. Even if their machine translation is paid for, students and teacher can use these excerpts to observe the use of terms in context, but also as study material in class. The excerpts provided in this section are on average 70-80 words long. They can be copied and inserted into a word document.
Getionary.pl, the open access version, can be used constantly, both for individual study and for class work with students.
The teacher can suggest extracts from specialist articles and, using the online dictionary, clarify terms.
