Description

On the Nauki Kopernik Centre platform, both teachers and students with advanced knowledge of Polish can find a series of well-made scientific podcasts (on natural sciences, sociology, psychology, etc.) with specialists in these fields.
The graphical design of the platform is a bit cumbersome, but after a first start, students can find the podcast transcripts relatively easily and orient themselves according to the short presentations on the podcast.
The free podcasts (presented by specialists in sociology, history, representatives of the Polish Academy of Sciences, etc.) can be particularly good material for self-study, for developing language skills, but also for developing critical thinking.
Some podcasts last over an hour. They can be recommended for individual study. It is therefore recommended that the teacher gives a presentation of the materials with free access.
Shorter podcasts (about 25-30 minutes) should be chosen for building practical lessons. But even so, the teacher should schedule two lessons to make full use of these materials.
Even 30-minute podcasts can be split into two sequences.
Listening to and working with such material allows students to learn specialist terms from different scientific fields. They can also become more familiar with the scientific style.

Case study

This podcast is very interesting in that it draws listeners' attention to some important topics through discussions between experts. It is aimed at advanced learners (perhaps more useful for PhD students than undergraduate students).
It can be recommended for individual study. For classroom study, however, it is far too broad and complex. You can choose an 8-10 minute excerpt to discuss with your students. So I think this podcast is a starting point for building a teaching scenario, explaining vocabulary and grammar. Excerpts can be incorporated into several lessons.
However, I appreciate the proposal and think that the topic of conflict management could be an interesting topic to discuss with the students.

Guidelines

The teacher will familiarise students with this portal, introduce them to the free podcasts and where and how they can open the transcripts.
https://www.kopernik.org.pl/podcast-tu-centrum-nauki-kopernik
He will introduce them to the chosen podcast and explain the main theme,
"Culture of conflict”, briefly introducing the guests.
He will prepare the students for listening to the material by suggesting that they open the transcript first and listen in two stages.
1. The teacher invites the students to listen to the podcast and watch the transcript (sequence 1, 0 - minute 14, sequence 2, minute 14 to the end).
2. After going through the listening stage, the teacher will explain several terms and expressions that appear in the discussion (and in the transcript). The teacher invites students to look up the PWN dictionaries available online.
3. Guided Conversation - What does "conflict culture" mean? How is it viewed by the guests? What historical, political, and social factors influence Polish attitudes to conflict? Students are invited to think about attitudes to conflict in their societies.
4. With the transcript of the podcast in front
of them, students are asked to point to the extract they find most important, most inspiring and briefly explain the reasons behind their choices.
5. Students are invited to select 5 specialist terms from the podcast transcript and check them in Słownik jezyka Polskiego, available online, free access.
6. Students are invited to describe a conflict situation and evaluate the impact it has had on them.
Other activities
Because the podcast is quite large, it is advisable to divide it into smaller sections and listen to it with breaks.
Students are invited to discuss the relationship between 'conflict culture', 'consensus culture'.

Comments:
Episode 5, Konflikty. O tym, czy jesteśmy a nice skazani / Conflicts. How we are condemned to them is made by Dr Ilona Iłowiecka-Tańska and features Prof. Andrzej Leder, philosopher of culture, professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and psychotherapist, and Maciej Tański, a mediator who deals with family issues, relationships within organizations.
The discussion of conflicts is therefore from several perspectives, philosophical, historical, cultural, economic.
Even if at first glance the material may seem difficult, with the help of the teacher who divides it into sequences and provides further explanations, it can be read by students at the B2 level of Polish.
The podcast is an interesting and useful material for those who want to get to grips with translating scientific texts. Because it is oral communication, even if many specialised terms appear, the podcast is more accessible to students than a strictly specialist scientific text.
