Description

The electronic version of Latvian-Lithuanian dictionary was designed according to the already published dictionary of Latvian-Lithuanian in 2003. (Compiler Butkus, A. Kaunas: Aesti, 2003). It comprises about 43,000 words. The search system is convenient: there is a virtual keyboard of Latvian letters. This dictionary is meant for everybody who wants to find out the meaning of a definite Latvian word translated into Lithuanian. The dictionary comprises some collocations and idioms, which allow users to identify semantic differences between the languages. Search result list shows all the records of the names, phrases, examples, where the search word was found. All the records in search results can be viewed through the display of the highlighted search word. The dictionary can recognise word inflections, therefore, any inflection of a word in Latvian can be searched. Abbreviations in records provide supplementary specific information, e.g., the area of use, grammar features, etc. Also, access to data portal eurotermbank.com is provided (it might be useful for higher level language learners or translators).
It is difficult to distinguish the CEFR level: it is meant for those who study Latvian, and through it can get acquainted with some words in Lithuanian. This resource is applicable to all CEFR levels. The marked levels above (A1/A2) indicate how many levels of Lithuanian can be achieved when studying the subject 'Latvian Language' during one semester. The same levels can be achieved when studying 'Comparative Lithuanian and Latvian Linguistics' (MA study programme) since the students are already familiar with Basic Latvian.

Case study

The Latvian-Lithuanian dictionary is used from the very beginning of the course on 'Latvian Language', and is used throughout the whole semester, mainly for students’ homework assignments. It is also applicable in class activities when students are given tasks to translate texts independently.
During the course on 'Comparative Lithuanian and Latvian Linguistics', much attention is paid to the words in Lithuanian and their equivalents in Latvian from both semantic and grammatical perspectives.

Guidelines

The dictionary can be used for search of the meanings of unfamiliar words (for translation), as any other bilingual dictionary. The advantage of letonika.lv lies in its virtual keyboard (it has been attached quite recently). It provides the user with an opportunity to see other words in a cluster that the search word happens to fall into. Such an opportunity is extremely beneficial for advanced students (teachers as well), e.g. while teaching the subject 'Comparative Lithuanian and Latvian Linguistics', semantic or grammar categories of the words can be compared – gender, number similarities/differences.

Comments:
The Latvian-Lithuanian dictionary provides every student (and teacher, as well) with an opportunity to enrich/expand their vocabulary according to the personal needs – to search for new words, identify grammar and semantic differences between Lithuanian (learner’s language) and Latvian (target language) etc., also to translate texts from Latvian into Lithuanian.
