Description

This podcast is easily accessible and presents a total of 12 episodes on the business topic. Although it has 36 minutes it is not boring or excessively technical. In fact, this episode is a good example of an interesting and straightforward resource, since it delves into the role of women in nowadays entrepreneurship.
The resource is fit for the classroom context and can be part of a more elaborate debate on gender equality in companies, namely in executive positions in Portugal and while in comparison with other countries, for instance in northern Europe.

Case study

This resource can be used with Management or Economics students. Apart from allowing a discussion on gender equality in a context where it is not always true, it supports the issue of entrepreneurship and listening to several women talking about it can become engaging. Students will probably react very well to these issues, since they are so highlighted by them, even in their social media. The use of this resource is recommended to groups of under 30 students, which will still allow a diversity of opinions to be expressed. Besides enhancing listening and speaking skills, a task-based approach can also be used, leading the podcast towards a more grammatical solution or to the practice of several language structures.

Guidelines

In a classroom context
1 - The lecturer performs a brainstorming session using the Interactive board and an appropriate digital tool. If students do not mention the gender issue in companies, then the lecturer will introduce it or he/she will guide the students towards it.
2 – Students debate the topic among themselves and report on it in a large group.
3 – Students listen to the podcast and answer a worksheet with questions on it.
4 – After listening to the podcast, the lecturer will once again promote the debate, trying to perceive whether there is a difference between their initial ideas and the ideas following the podcast. Students will report their conclusions to the interactive board.
As a follow-up, students can also write an essay on the topic.

Comments:
This resource matches both lecturers' and students’ needs. While using this resource students can develop their listening and speaking skills and consequently enlarge their vocabulary. Lecturers have the possibility to use a real-world resource in classes related to the wider topic. From the technical viewpoint, the resource is easy to use, since the link is available on the website of one of the most widely read Portuguese newspapers. The podcast in itself becomes attractive and the gender equality topic is always hot in today’s debates. Apart from this issue, the lecturer can also approach the resource through the more general idea of entrepreneurship in today’s world economy.
