Description

“Advisory Dictionary of Document Language” is an online and offline contemporary reference dictionary intended for officials as well as anyone interested in formal business writing. While the definitions are primarily given in Estonian, the dictionary provides occasional translations into English or Russian. The Dictionary may also be used as a reference book as it offers suggestions improving one’s written Estonian skills. The dictionary's recommendations are broadly based on the written language norm. The Dictionary has been developed by the Institute of the Estonian Language (Eesti Keele Instituut).

Case study

The resource is a hands-on reference guide for anyone willing to master formal business correspondence. The resource provides information on the standard and commonly accepted language forms and expressions and gives suggestions regarding alternative uses. It may also be effective to find occasional translations into English or Russian. It is convenient that the resource may be used both online and offline.

Comments:
The user may choose whether they want to use an offline or online version of the resource. In the offline mode, a pdf of the Dictionary may be downloaded (look for a small pdf icon on the top of the webpage). In the online mode, the user has to enter the word they are interested in into the search line. The Dictionary provides explanations in Estonian, and occasionally also gives translations of selected terms into English or Russian. There are also numerous active links to pages further commenting on a particular suggestion given in the Dictionary.
In the online version, the user may choose what information they want to select by setting the specific parameter in the right-most column (the options being "Headword", "Usage and application", or "Full article".

Note the green square at the left below the search line. It is an expandable link which helps set additional parameters on queries. The instructions are given in a variety of languages, including, but not limited to, English, German, Finnish, and Latvian.

Below the search line is the inscription in Estonian. Its English translation is "You will find keywords in this Dictionary". The translations of keywords provided on the main page are as follows: "Reference laboratory", "Extreme", "Corporate Identity", "Translate", "Expand".
