Description

The language instructional video is suitable for both beginners and more advanced learners of the Slovenian language, as it introduces grammar in a systematic way. Since the language of instruction is English, a basic knowledge of English is required in order to fully master the material, however the tables make the content clear and help understanding. The video is great for individual language learning, but can also be used for classroom teaching, where the teacher can give learners activities and additional tasks to practice grammar. Although the emphasis is on learning and understand Slovenian grammar, some basic vocabulary knowledge is required and learning vocabulary is also possible. Although the material improves grammar knowledge, some vocabulary can be acquired or learnt.

Case study

The material would either be tested in classroom context or as a take-home project. Students would be instructed to watch the video, copy or print and learn basic Slovenian grammar. The whole video can be watched at the first time to get a global view. The meaning of the unknown words can be looked up in a dictionary. With the help of a dictionary or the class teacher further examples can be found that support the grammar. Studying the charts students can acquire some basic vocabulary as well. Further practice is possible by learning new vocabulary with the help of the teacher. Learning basic grammar is the key to quick success because leaners can start practicing in a systematic way.
As a follow-up exercise students can share their knowledge, and do some exercises together.

Guidelines

Lead-in activity/warmer: Eliciting information on learners’ knowledge of Slovakian vocabulary. They may come up with some words or expressions, or some international vocabulary that would motivate the group members to use Slovakian.
Step 1: Pre-watching activity. Tell the students that they are going to watch a video that teaches basic Slovakian grammar. The video allows students to recognise and practise basic grammar. Students do the preparation task first and instructed to watch the whole video.
Step 2: Watching the video, and reading and listening the grammatical explanations students are introduced in basic Slovenian grammar and some vocabulary that supports explanations.
Step 3: Students then give feedback on their understanding. On the second view they are instructed to copy or print the grammar charts and look up unknown words in dictionary. With the help of the teacher they can use and practice grammar.
Step 4: Learners can work in pairs. They can check each other’s understanding and collect some more vocabulary to practise grammar. The charts can also be processed as a gap filling activity.

Comments:
The video is informative for both students and lecturers because students can work individually and with the help of the teacher who can provide them with supplementary material and creative tasks.
The instructional language of the video is English, but it is clear and understandable. It motivates students to use their language skills in a complex way. Monitoring students’ own progress can be through grammar exercises provided by the teacher.
It is possible to adopt the contents to students’ need because the material can be supplemented or accompanied by other sources or material.
The video is intended to a larger audience, and it is useful for both individual and classroom use. It is a well-constructed introduction to Slovakian grammar. The explanations make fast progress possible, and they motivate students to watch the other parts of the video series as well.
The video is easily accessed for those who want to learn Slovakian with the help of the internet.
