Description

The material provided in the "Forum for Business German" is primarily designed for teachers of German as a foreign language and is a service of the Institut für Internationale Kommunikation e.V. Düsseldorf. Teachers can choose from a variety of materials in PDF format on different topics. The materials on the topic of "Finance" are divided into different types of exercises: Some of the materials are designed exclusively for the development and expansion of subject-specific vocabulary, others are purely factual and informational texts (e.g. on the topic of world banks) or complete lesson plans (e.g. dealing with the German constitution).
The materials are not sorted by level of difficulty and all require solid language skills. Each PDF document on the topic of vocabulary contains 10 multiple-choice questions with a corresponding answer key. The following subsections are covered: Money, Banks, Stock Market.
On the positive side, there are additional explanations in the answer key- brief explanations let the learner understand why each of the other answer choices in a multiple-choice question must be excluded. Here is an example:
In which series are expressions named that are not colloquial synonyms for money?
a) Knete, Koks, Kohle
b) Zaster, Moos, Kies
c) Tand, Schrott, Schund
d) Kröten, Pinke, Schotter
Answer key
der Tand, / : wertloses Zeug ; der Schrott, / : Altmetall; der Schund, / : Minderwertiges, Wertloses;die Knete, / ; der Koks, /; die Kohle, -n; der Zaster, / ; das Moos, / ; der Kies, / ; die Kröten (Pl.) , die Pinke, / ; der Schotter, / ;
The learner gains knowledge beyond that of the topic being covered through the additional references.

Case study

The source was tested with the students of the Faculty of Applied Languages.
Number of students: 18
The following parts of the materials for teaching were tested:
Topic: Financial world - money - colloquial language and idioms: technical vocabulary
Topic: Financial world - banks (1)
Topic: Financial world - Banks (2)
Topic: Stock market / General I
The students were asked to work independently on the above exercises. In advance, they were told which language skills they should pay attention to. Then the students were asked to evaluate the exercises in terms of their comprehensibility and usefulness. The students were asked to comment on whether they found the learning materials presented to be motivating and useful, and whether they thought they contributed to the development of their German language skills and the individual language skills.
In this case, the materials were 4 exercises designed for the development and expansion of subject-specific vocabulary. The exercises focused mainly on the development of communicative competence, vocabulary development and the students' ability to apply the acquired knowledge in further communication.
The additional explanations that can be found in the solution section, explaining to the students why the other options of a multiple choice question have to be excluded, can be considered as a plus.
The students evaluated the exercises very positively, but they have noticed that to create these exercises you need quite a good knowledge of German and the exercises are time-consuming. They found the exercises very interesting and motivating. Overall, it can be stated that the presented teaching material is satisfactory, the students worked well with it and evaluated it as useful for the development of language skills.

Guidelines

All materials are available either as PDF files or Word documents and can be printed accordingly. As far as the "Vocabulary" section is concerned, all multiple-choice questionnaires are combined in one document, each with the corresponding answer key. No registration is required for full access to all materials. The materials can be used completely independently of each other and according to individual needs. Of course, it is possible to omit individual topics without any problems - the offer does not have to be worked through completely. The game "Say it differently" is very similar to the well-known parlor game "Taboo". The teacher can choose from 150 terms, which are sorted by difficulty. Detailed instructions with game variants are attached. The players basically have the task of explaining terms to their fellow players. Accordingly, the special focus of this game is on the language competence of speaking.

Comments:
Many of the materials provided are arranged by level of difficulty. The teacher can cater to the existing language level of the learners and select the material accordingly. All materials are available as PDF or Word documents and can be easily saved or printed. The document "Household and Budget" provided under "Worksheets and Lesson Outlines" is a complete lesson outline and focuses more on expanding the core competencies of reading comprehension and speaking. Within the framework of a lesson unit, students can critically examine the German constitution and legal terminology and complete assignments on the associated texts. The course is particularly suitable for students who wish to gain a professional foothold in the field of law/economics. Students of German as a Foreign Language who already have a high level of proficiency also have the opportunity to expand their vocabulary in a subject-specific way.
