Description

The online learning space Potilashuone is designed for non-native Finnish speaker medical and healthcare students. The material offers tasks in ward. It consists in 6 modules, starting from vocabulary training on different instruments in the medical room. The student learns the words through pictures. The second module starts and introduces the student in an interactive space under the guidance of a native Finnish speaker. The modules from three to six propose to the student different exercises and a variety of tasks on professional terminology, communication skills and grammar presented in the first two modules. The platform introduces the student through the different environments and situations in the patient room and proposes to perform different professional and language related tasks linked to it, as well as tasks that combine both professional and language competence. The recommended browser for this resource is Firefox.

Verkko-opetustila Potilashuone on tarkoitettu suomea toisena tai vieraana kielenä puhuville lääketieteen ja terveydenhuollon opiskelijoille. Materiaali tarjoaa tehtäviä, jotka sijoittuvat sairaalaan potilashuoneeseen. Se koostuu 6 moduulista joissa edetään vaihe vaiheelta. Ensimmäisessä vaiheessa opitaan sanastoa potilashuoneen eri välineistä. Oppilas oppii sanat kuvasanakirjan avulla. Toinen moduuli esittelee opiskelijalle interaktiivisen potilashuoneen jossa toimitaan äidinkielisen puhujan ohjauksessa. Materiaali toimii parhaiten Firefox -selaimella.

Case study

The teaching source uses the problem-based learning approach and it helps students to perceive the learning objects as part of a whole. After the first module on professional vocabulary the learner enters in an interactive space where the learner has to filter out the vocabulary and structural information that are useful to they from the rich linguistic material of the native Finnish speaker. The learner has to constantly respond to the instructor’s requests and prompts, carrying out different functions that help them in learning effective communication in different professional situations. The material suits well for blended teaching as it helps students in making connections between the classroom environment and the real world.

Guidelines

Student assignment before class. Proceed step by step. First, familiarize with the objects and equipment in the patient room in the picture dictionary task (Step 1). Then go to the interactive environment and follow the instructions of the native speaker (step 2). If the guide’s speech is not clear on the first listening, it is possible to listen again as many times as it is necessary. After, proceed to practice the structures and vocabulary (steps 3-6).
Classroom work: Once the student has gone through all the steps, the skills can be applied with a working pair. Another student listens to the instructions and passes the information on to the couple, who do the tasks according to the instructions.

Comments:
The material provides a step by step approach on learning medical room terminology and communication skills. The learner is guided by native speaker instructor. The material provides a good support for students for example before the practical training in a hospital.
Materiaali lähestyy hoitoalan terminologiaa ja viestintätaitoja askel askeleelta oppimispolulla syntyperäisen puhujan opastamana. Materiaali soveltuu hyvin tukemaan opiskelijaa esimerkiksi ennen kentällä tapahtuvaa harjoittelua.
