Description

"Deutschkurs Medizin" is an offer of Springer Medizin Verlag. Partial contents of the book „Deutsch für Ärztinnen und Ärzte“ are have therefore been made available online. For full access, it is only required to enter an e-mail address and a user name. The registration serves to save any notes made during usage and to save the individual learning progress. The focus of the course is on practising and memorising vocabulary specific to the medical profession - the seven learning sections (anatomical terms, materials, professions in the health sector, training, functional rooms, specialist departments and anatomical terms on the model) are digital index card systems. The student works with English as the source language and checks whether he or she has mastered the corresponding German terms. The respective index card can be marked with either a green or red button depending on the learning success. The cards are then automatically sorted into corresponding learning boxes and presented again in the further course of learning. In addition, notes can be added to the individual index cards, for example, the translation in one's own mother tongue.
Under the heading "Practice material", the student will find audio files that cover typical situations and challenges (anamnesis and counseling interview, case presentation, doctor's letter) of a doctor's everyday professional life and serve to improve the pronunciation and feel for language.

Case study

The following case study will show how the practice material from this resource can be integrated into an LSP course for physicians independently of the textbook mentioned.
Target group:
Medical professionals who wish to work primarily in Germany or who wish to complete their specialist training in Germany and/or prepare for the specialist language examination in Germany.
Number of participants: Course between 4 and 8 participants.
Prerequisite: Level B2 of the CEFR.
Method used:
The following three audio files in the practice material can be used to practice listening comprehension in the topics "general anamnesis" (5.2), "physical examination" (6.2) and "case presentation" (8.3), because they are about the same patient and thus the context is already given. However, the listening comprehension tasks need to be created by the LSP Lecturer.
The results obtained:
After the participants have solved the task and exchanged ideas in the plenary, they formulate questions based on the information in the anamnesis form. They discuss these questions in groups of two. The lecturer supports the groups in this process. Afterwards the participants listen the audio file (5.1) on the topic "General anamnesis" in the sections: Introduction of the doctor; Questions to the patient; current anamnesis: introductory questions; about the course of the complaints; further questions related to the pain; general symptoms; miscellaneous. After each section, the participants edit and modify their questions and statements on the medical history sheet. Then they discuss any unanswered questions in plenary and make corrections and additions to the case history sheet. The next step is to simulate a general anamnesis conversation in a group of two. The participants record their general anamnesis (audio or video) and send the file to the LSP lecturer for comments.
The risks to be considered when using the resource:
The basic vocabulary in the resource is predefined and cannot adapt to the lecturer's and student's need.

Guidelines

In order to use the course offering, a short registration is necessary, which, however, only requires the entry of an email address and a password. The user can then choose from a variety of topics and practice the corresponding vocabulary in digital flashcard systems. The registration saves the individual learning progress. The learner works with English as the source language and independently checks whether he/she has mastered the corresponding German terms. The cards are then automatically sorted into corresponding learning boxes and presented again in the further learning process. Comments:
Although the course is largely limited to learning vocabulary, it nevertheless offers a good opportunity to gain an insight into the contents of the training book "Deutsch für Ärztinnen und Ärzte". However, the course should be regarded as a "taster offer" which can be worked on additionally and supportively, but cannot and should not replace extensive practice material in the form of a book, for example. The content provided by Springer offers too little depth of content for this. However, anyone thinking of purchasing the training book has a good opportunity to familiarize themselves, at least partially, with the topics covered and the structure of the book free of charge.
